Finally found one of the references I was remembering, "Cat -v considered
harmful" - http://harmful.cat-v.org/cat-v/ - Rob Pike and Brian Kernighan
complaining about the impurity of some of the innovations that UCB had
added to UNIX at the time, circa 1983.
