There is no need to move off Stable. You can install a previous version of Icedove from http://snapshot.debian.net/package/icedove . For example, version 1.5.0.13+1.5.0.14b.dfsg1-0etch1 may be what you're looking for.
I also have 1.5.0.12.dfsg1-0etch1 (i386) in my /var/apt/archives if you want it.
