It's definitely not X or anything X-related, cat'ing the device inside
or outside of X (with X not even running) produces the same results.
I did some googling after my last post and it seems that there have been
some kernel updates in the 2.5 branch related to the Logitech MX series.
So I guess it's time to try a 2.6 kernel (it's running 2.4.20
currently).

As I mentioned previously, I've been having some hardware "issues" which
have caused very mysterious problems with regard to certain kernels not
working, but I now know the problem, which is explained here:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28746
A couple of the pins on my ATX connector turned out to be melted and
very dark brown/black. I plan on performing surgery on the board
sometime today, and hopefully then a 2.6 kernel will actually boot and
not freeze. :)
