I suspect you haven't included OSS support, the description of splay don't mention alsa, so it probably need an OSS device driver.
At this point it will be useful to see the modules loaded in your box with "lsmod". You probably have installed the alsa-utils
package, so try "aplay -w your_file.wav", be sure to have the volume set high enough ("alsamixer", you will find this too in
alsa-utils)...
