The most recent discussion I found with a quick search started nearly 2 years ago. Nobody appeared to be arguing strongly against the switch, although there were a few caveats, like having a sane migration path:

It looks more like the idea stalled than was rejected. If that is the case, it shouldn't be a problem to discuss it again.
