Could you please calm down? Really, the discussion has no value at the
moment. If someone *asks* if a package can be removed, it's not a
decision of a dictator.

Please accept that there is no problem at the moment - the current
uninstallability of Gnome 1 will be fixed as soon as gdk-imlib was
recompiled against the newer libpng12.

Removing the old Gnome 1 libs and core applications from Debian is a
long-term goal, as there's no upstream support, which means that we need
to cope with security issues on our own and user requests will probably
lead to nothing. It's not in Debian's interest to keep those
packages.

The problem of 3rd party applications that haven't transitioned, but are
still actively developed and used, needs to be solved by porting them to
the newer Gtk+ and Gnome as fast as possible. If these blockers are
solved, the old libs can be removed and all developers are happy again.

I'm pretty sure that everyone involved in this discussion can agree with
this description, so let's please start from this and decide how we can
all decide on *one* way to proceed in this issue.

I would recommend to compile a list of packages that would become
uninstallable when we remove libgtk1.2. After that, a few people should
check which of these packages are still in use and need to be
transitioned. The (upstream) maintainers of these packages should be
reminded that they should port their applications to Gnome 2.
This should give us a way to plan ahead and, if needed, give help where
it's needed.
