choice of a default option do not tell if preferred in any case

We have no way of knowing how many of our users would have chosen "I 
want what you offer as default no matter if it was not the default", 
because we never asked that.

We did not offer the additional option of "don't care" and recorded 
whether the default option was picked explicitly or indirectly resolved. 
That way we could now change default and fairly handle upgrades too.

We are stuck being unfair to some.  Question is whom to treat unfairly.
