Not only that, but why would one use the same distro for widely
diverging purposes? The only distro I'd ever consider for both desktop
AND server would be Debian, but chances are that for a pure server I'd
use a BSD.

And Ubuntu is a marvelous desktop, but the Ubuntu's I've used would be
completely inadequate for servers, although I hear they have one
devoted to servers.

Not only that, but although Debian's great for *me*, I wouldn't dare
give it to my wife or kids, they need something with training wheels,
like Ubuntu or perhaps OpenSuSE.

I know people who are much more tolerant of long lists of instructions
than I. These people would be right at home with Arch, Gentoo, Funtoo
or Slack. So if I had an uber-Geek in the family, that's what I'd give
him or her.

I understand the benefit of using one distro and learning it in and
out, but I think in the long run that won't work for someone with a
wide variety of computing needs.
