Rmore details on network was Setting up a network Was: Re: a very carefully asked question?

I do agree on the subject line, but it was based on past posting experience.
Here is the deal.
because I could find no one locally here in Toronto to help with my desired install of debian, someone privately offered to put a basic install on a hard drive and send it to me. I later had someone who maintains my other computers build a unit for this drive. While I had debian, of course I had equally no idea what was and was not included. However debian did find the other active hardware, meaning if debian can find a network card not connected to a network it may be there. As I have dialup I did not use the machine opting to wait until I found a dsl provider. i also hoped I would find someone in person locally with debian wisdom, which has not happened.
so,
this is a cable connected setup, not wireless.
the configuration will allow for dhtp. In fact that is what I have used and will use again in dos. While the person assisting me is extremely capable, they have not used LInux over much, so the most advanced wisdom I can gain the better. To keep it basic, since the idea of debian finding the card even if not connected might make sense, I take it that will be the best first step? second, can someone send me the command one might use to learn if ice Wiesel is included on the drive?
I can provide it to the technician in advance.
along with the others shared before.

Karen has formulated a query with too broad an aspect - "How do I
plan out setting up a network connection?" She could do with
narrowing it down to whether it is a cabled or wireless connection
she wants and whether she prefers to use ifupdown or networkmanager
to manage it.

Assuming that she knows what ifupdown and networkmanager are. I on
the other hand would assume that her question was so broad because she
did not really know what to ask. She could however done better with
the subject line, as Lisi pointed out.
