after you have the tex source written, do the following:

tex file.tex; dvips -o file.ps file.dvi; ps2pdf file.ps

> kdvi (provided You're using kde) and export it to ps (or directly to pdf).

apt-get install dvips, or even better, since in your case you seem to
have an incomplete tex system:
tasksel, choose tex environment.
