| at the end of the current URL and backspace to the beginning, frequently
| highliting part of it by mistake and losing the buffer I wanted to

Ctrl-U is your friend.  No need to backspace when "kill" works in X
just as well as in a terminal.  (just don't use a windows machine --
it doesn't work that way =p)  Just be careful when you click (in the
url bar) to click and not hold-and-drag.  It may also help if you
click beyond the last character in the current address.
