In gimp kan man sich leicht totsuchen oder nix finden, wenn man unter
Menü->Bild->Modus nicht weiter sucht, weil das einem nichts sagt. Also
  Menü->Bild->Modus->Indiziert
führt zum richtigen Dialog.

Dafür geht das noch einfacher, auch wenn's nicht dokumentiert ist:
  Speichern unter ... / Dateityp nach Endung
Als Endung ".xpm.gz" eintippen, dann staucht das gimp selber zusammen
und fettich iss

... noch einmal schlafen ...
