Ich verfolge den Thread mit großem Interesse, da ich wie der OP
anscheinend das gleiche Problem habe. Ich weiß, Ihr könnt diese ganzen

Bei mir ist das Sytem auch ein (natürlich aktuelles) Debian Woody.

Installiert sind:

- X mit windowmaker + xterm + aterm.
- die mit X installierten Standardfonts sowie die empfohlenen
*-transcoded-* Fonts.
- die 3 euro-support-* Pakete.
- per tasksel ist auch die Zusammenstellung "German environment"
installiert.

Ausgewählt per

- dpkg-reconfigure console-common: qwertz, standard, latin1-nodeadkeys.
- dpkg-reconfigure locales: die 3 deutschen Codierungen iso8859-1,
iso8859-15 und utf8.

Als User habe ich zudem set-language-env ausgeführt und alles für
deutsch eingestellt.

Ergebnis:

- Umlaute funktionieren sowohl auf der Konsole auch auch im xterm/aterm.
- euro-test zeigt mir ein Euro-Symbol an. Die Darstellung ist also
prinzipiell erst mal kein Problem. Danach schlagen alle weiteren
Tests ("Drücke AltGr+e" usw.) allerdings fehl. :-(

Diese Tastenkombinationen bewirken folgendes (als User):

Konsole: AltGr+e --> ein weißes Kästchen
         AltGr+c --> ein kleines c, mit kleinen senkrechten Strichen
         oberhalb und unterhalb des Bogens

x-/aterm: AltGr+e --> keine Reaktion
          AltGr+c --> ein kleines c mit einem senkrechten Strich
          komplett durch (Cent-Symbol?)
          AltGr+$ (also 4 mit Shift-Taste) --> das Euro-Symbol.

Mittlerweile habe ich wirklich komplett den Überblick verloren.
Debian-Euro-HOWTO gelesen und auch /usr/share/doc/user-de sowie
/usr/share/doc/euro*.

Der Vollständigkeit halber noch ein paar Auszüge aus /etc (fast alle so
