I can tell you what I did in which order. I will give you my
(german) notes on teTeX upgrade (sorry, for not translating, but I
have a deadline tomorrow and still a lot to do); additional
explanations will be put in square brackets:

teTeX 3.0 aus Debian experimentell installiert [in Wirklichkeit die
Backports für Sarge]
- folgende Dateien »Maintainer's Version« installiert:
o 55fonts.cnf
o config.ps
=> eigene Änderungen an diesen Dateien sind dadurch
verloren -> also diese evtl. in den neuen Dateien
noch vornehmen
- ERROR => siehe tetex.updmap.XXhxSDhR
[!!! ERROR! The map file `eurosym.map' has not been found at all.
-> wurde bereits diskutiert]
- Aufzeichnung des Upgrades bzw. der weiteren Schritte:
tetex-upgrade_20050208 [kann ich zur Verfügung stellen]
- TeX capacitiy exceeded [exception dictionary = 1000]
=> /etc/texmf/texmf.d/95NonPath.cnf an entsprechender Stelle
(hyph_size) auf 10000 gesetzt
- MinionPro funktioniert nicht mehr
... und alle eigenen Schriften, deren Map-Dateien nur in
/etc/texmf/dvips liegen und nicht noch in $TEXMFHOME/dvips/config

$ cd /etc/texmf/dvips
$ cp M* mybirka.map mybodoni.map myhumanist.map mysouvenir.map
mythesans.map ~/texmf/dvips/config
[M* = MinionPro.map und MnSymbol.map]
$ texhash
=> half nicht
- $ su -
# cd /usr/share/texmf/dvips
# ls -l
...
config -> /etc/texmf/dvips
...
# mv config config.old
=> wird trotzdem gefunden beim zweiten Aufruf von updmap ...
# mv config.old config
# cd /etc/texmf
# mv dvips dvips.old
# texhash
# updmap
# update-updmap
# updmap
=> bleibt dabei: MinionPro wird nicht gefunden
# cd /usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/dvips
# ln -s /home/chris/texmf/fonts/map/dvips eigene
[ich gehe davon aus, dass ich zuvor alle Map-Dateien nach
/home/chris/texmf/fonts/map/dvips kopiert hatte, ohne es mir
notiert zu haben!]
# texhash
# update-updmap
# updmap
=> Dokumente mit bspw. MinionPro funktionieren immer noch nicht
# cd /usr/share/texmf/fonts/enc/dvips
# ln -s /home/chris/texmf/fonts/enc/dvips eigene
# texhash
=> hilft nichts
=> Diskussion mit den Debian-tetex-Maintainern hält an (05.08. 2005)
