Sorry about the delay.

The squeeze alpha2 hybrid iso does not boot with the method I tried 
first (i.e. copy the contents of live into a directory on usb drive)

However, if I write the image to the usb disk using dd, it works fine.

I must have screwed something up with the image I made.
