In any decent SATA or SCSI BIOS, it will disappear completely from the
bootstrap code's point of view (or at least, in all I messed with so far). 

Note that I do mean dead as in failing to POST.   IME that's what worn-out
disks do around here...

That means #0x80 will be the working unit, and that you don't have a #0x81
unit at all, in BIOS terms.
