According to http://popcon.debian.org/main/gnome/by_vote
338 people regularly use gnucash, making it about as popular as grip and
gnome-meeting, and much more popular than things like liferea,
sound-juicer and gdesklets.
A recent review of personal finance managers by lwn.net would suggest
that the other free software equivalents to gnucash have a lot less
features and different philosophy. I therefore doubt there would be an
easy transition to other packages if that became necessary.
The gnucash-changes list show that active development is going on in
their gnome2 branch, but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the project
to know when it'll be done.
I suspect patience will generally be the best option.
