Haven't posted yet to the list, but got to jump in here and agree with Jeff.
Have been busy today with another Debian user to try and fix his system. He ran a Gnome1.4 Sid desktop, and got gnome-terminal2 while updating some time ago. And trust me that wasn't a pretty sight. For some or another reason the anti-aliasing messed up the font display in the gnome-terminal2 menubar.
After about an hour of fiddling we decided to try upgrading to Gnome2, which helped this problem, but not other font problems (ie the Gnome-splash-screen, and gnome-calc).
