Re: [DebianGIS] Pkg-grass-general Digest, Vol 66, Issue 5

Hi all,

as a member of the OTB project, I 'll be glad to give you more informations about the library and the package.
We've not plan to provide debian packages for now. There is a remaining conflict between gdal and libTIFF describe here : http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/Problems-with-TIFF-internal-symbols-td3668897.html

Emmanuel CHRISTOPHE opened also a bug on the debian bugtracker 1 year ago about that I think. There is also lot's of technical discussion with a complete description of the problem on the otb-users public mailing list (with some codes which put the emphasis on the error). For now we hide the problem in monteverdi by switching the order in the list of link libraries (hide not solve)

That's true that OTB includes lots of internal library but there is for now no problem in the first test done for ubuntu platforms. We'll also want to work on the externalization of internal libraries in OTB which could be added as dependencies in the packaging method.

Do not hesitate if you need further informations, we're very obviously interested to provide also packages for debian...

Regards,

Manuel

Commited.
BTW, if you are interested you can become a member of Debian Blends
team and can get commit permissions as well.

Anybody keen on testing and uploading to sid?

Kind regards

Andreas, thank you very much for proposing me to become a member of
Debian Blends team.
I would like a lot to contribute in some manner to the debian project.
What is expected to do a member of the Debian Blends team?
(Please fee free to contact me in private if you need.)

The next release of OTB (3.8) and Monteverdi (the GUI tool based on
OTB) will be in December

http://groups.google.com/group/otb-users/browse_thread/thread/4efc34af596a90dc?hl=en

I plan to make some more testing on debian packages after the release
is out.

As a general consideration it have to be noted that OTB depends on a
big number of libraries and often internal versions of those libs (in
some cases patched) are used.

Giving a quick look to  libotb3.8_3.8.0-0ppa~maverick_amd64.deb I see:

/usr/lib/otb/libdxf.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libITK*
/usr/lib/otb/libotbliblas.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbmuparser.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbopenjpeg.so.1.2.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbossim.so
/usr/lib/otb/libotbsvm.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libsiftfast.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libtinyXML.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbkml.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbconfigfile.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotbedison.so.3.8.0
/usr/lib/otb/libotb6S.so.3.8.0

I don't know how strict is the debian policy with respect to this kind
of solution.

regards

I think explaining it in public makes some sense in case others might
like to do it as well.  It's simple:

 1. Ask for a guest account on alioth.debian.org
 2. Once your guest account is created either ask for becoming
    a member of the team
     https://alioth.debian.org/projects/blends/
or ping me in private mail with your guest account name.

This grants you commit permission to SVN and you can edit the tasks
files yourself.  This probably should be mentioned in the doc at

  http://blends.alioth.debian.org/blends/ap-DevelDescription.en.html

(but once you are a member of the team you can even add a paragraph
about this in case I might forget this. :-) )

> I don't know how strict is the debian policy with respect to this kind

The policy is to use the Debian packaged library instead of a copy
provided with some random source (if possible - there are some
exceptions).  If the needed library is not yet packaged it would be
good style to do this first and link against the packaged library.
The decision what to finally do is not always that straight - just
discuss it here (or on debian-mentors) in case you are unsure.

Kind regards

      Andreas.
