the features removed in GNOME 2 are not really removed, just disabled
because they had problems that there was no time to fix. So, the best
solution is to checkout the sources from GNOME CVS, fix the broken bits
(small things usually) and re-enable those parts in the build. I think
this is much much easier than maintaining a GNOME 1.4 package
repository.

As I said, usually these problems are really small. As an example,
gdialog was one day disabled in the gnome-utils build, many people
(included myself) complained because they used it, a few patches were
sent, and now, gdialog is again in gnome-utils, and all gdialog users
are now happy again.
