Well, there you go. I didn't know about that package. I guess my
argument would be that I shouldn't *have* to know that package. That
kind of stuff should be in some like "font-base" or "fonts-common". It
looks like defoma may be package/project that meets my wishlist.

Well, it seems like everytime I upgrade X, or the GNOME stuff, my default
fonts (in titles, menus, etc.) all change size, or format. I can change
the GNOME default, but that doesn't affect Mozilla, etc. etc. etc.

Exactly. While I do understand where all these different solutions
originate (different needs, different platforms, etc.), it's
frustrating.
