It's possible. For the most part, we already do that, though you may
have to install a few more packages. (I.E. for gsfonts, you have
to install gsfonts-x11 to use them under X.) Where specifically 
were you having problems? (Abiword doesn't work, but Abiword
chose a font solution different from the rest of the world.)
