I don't see a reason why there *must* be two logos from the same
author.

Debian will use the formal one on the certified official CDs and stuff
like that, like a trademark, sign of value etc.
Unformal one is for general use, wherever and wherever anyone wants.

Nope. The logo that is being chosen is logo of the Debian Project, not
our Linux distribution.

BTW Ever heard of Debian GNU/HURD?
