Hmm cool approach. I've been back and forth with Raven to
try and get the source re-licenced.

That's entirely possible within a "closed ecosystem" like
say, just Debian main, but I doubt any ports would accept
such a patch upstream.  So it wouldn't scale up to new
ports, and it wouldn't be much use for new IWADs other than
freedoom either. The alternatives system caters for both.
