That's my experience as well, unless upstream decides to write an init
script specifically for Debian and Ubuntu systems.  Usually upstreams
either don't maintain an init script at all or provide one for only the
distributions the upstream author happens to use.

Red Hat init scripts are often dramatically different than Debian and
Ubuntu init scripts.

It's far more likely that an upstream unit file can be used in Debian,
possibly with some tweaks to paths.
