Well, I build my own kernels and they all have the firmware directory
included. Why not compare all relevant parts instead complaining?!

Start by kernel config, then initrd etc. I'm sure you'll find the reason.
I can not do this for you.

I know that mkinitramfs and update-initramfs take the configuration
from /etc/initramfs-tools/

there are two files there initramfs.conf and update-initramfs.conf.
