Just yesterday, when doing some upgrades, I saw a message in the logs WRT
ifupdown & network manager.  It stated;

eth0 is listed in /etc/network/interfaces so cannot be handled using
network manager. To achieve that goal, it has to be removed
from /etc/network/interfaces.

Not the exact wording, but you get the idea.
