yes I understand, but in my opinion the menu item and the power button take
different ways to make use of the hibernate method that is exposed via dbus
so if the power button on the notebook uses a program running with root
privs it may explain why it works, while the user interface does not have
Have you checked what you can do regarding powermanagement - I don't recall
reading this in your postings

method bool org.freedesktop.UPower.HibernateAllowed()
this means that your mate could hibernate also as normal user by using the
Hibernate() method via dbus??
just a thought. I am not using gnome, I read the bug desc briefly when I was
looking for solution to my issue ... The extension looks cool
