It should be possible to install systemd on a system that already has some other init system installed on it. This should be tested, but how?
The obvious way is to upgrade a wheezy system, following the "upgrade to jessie while keeping sysvinit as the init system" procedure, reboot, and then install the package 'systemd-sysv' and make sure that the system (a) keeps running and (b) reboots cleanly.
