My LCD monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024
xrandr believes VGA-1 is only capable of 1024x768. Why do you believe
1280x1024 is possible?
1. The monitor keeps telling me it works better at 1280x1024.

2. ddcprobe gives several 1280x1024 choices.

It appears to me that the appropriate mode is missing. You could try
to add it manually (information taken from
http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 Section III.5):

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_75" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync

I wasn't sure whether you were giving me an example or the exact line I needed. The above gives:

X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (RRCreateMode)Thanks
Serial number of failed request: 31
Current serial number in output stream: 31

Thanks,

Paul
