Probably use different package names, i.e. its a dependency issue.
Ubuntu *IS* using it the way it was meant to be used, why should you
think otherwise?

Disagree. Mailing lists are far superior. Try reading the forum offline!

Don't forget to check that your /etc/apt/sources.lst entries point to
etch and not testing, otherwise you may end up with a broken system once
etch goes stable.
