I use following in ~/.muttrc and it is fine.

set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-15.15n %?M?(#%03M)&(%4l)? %s"

Most of the configurable things on these well used programs can be
tailored to one's taste.  It may not be so obvious as GUI, but ...
