If memory serves me (still) well, I had problems with the Debian package
and installed the one directly from NVIDIA.
These are the locations where I have nvidia:

# locate nvidia
/.dev/nvidia0
/dev/nvidia0
/.dev/nvidia1
/.dev/nvidia2
/.dev/nvidia3
/.dev/nvidia4
/.dev/nvidia5
/.dev/nvidia6
/.dev/nvidia7
/.dev/nvidiactl
/dev/nvidiactl
/dev/.udevdb/class@nvidia@nvidia0
/dev/.udevdb/class@nvidia@nvidiactl
/lib/modules/2.6.3-1-386/kernel/drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.8-1-686/kernel/drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.8-1-686/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
/root/.nvidia-settings-rc
/usr/bin/nvidia-bug-report.sh
/usr/bin/nvidia-installer
/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
/usr/lib/directfb-0.9.20/gfxdrivers/libdirectfb_nvidia.la
/usr/lib/directfb-0.9.20/gfxdrivers/libdirectfb_nvidia.so
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111
/usr/lib/mplayer/vidix/nvidia_vid.so
/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1
/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/nvidia-settings-user-guide.txt
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-1-686/include/config/agp/nvidia
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-1-686/include/config/agp/nvidia/module.h
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-1/include/config/agp/nvidia.h
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o
/var/lib/nvidia
/var/log/nvidia-installer.log

/usr/share/doc/udev; this doesn't exist any longer, since I had to remove
udev to read back the images from my camera.

I wonder where the NVIDIA installer added the module ?

Thanks so much for helping me to get X up again, anyway !
