Actually, it is. The whole issue is the ease of use on using the system. Having the machine tell me "Nono, be a good boy and don't use that!" is counter to that goal. :P

And it really is the case that I've never happened to see a blue screen of death on my XP system. I agree that old versions of Windows had this problem. But I'm just comparing the most recent versions of Windows and Linux. (XP vs. Sarge/2.6.9/udev)

Freedom to swap out my hardware whenever I want as often as I want only occurs on one of those OSs. That's the only consideration that really matters.
