Hi Greg
Believe me, I tried to install it ;) I googled and tried various work
arounds to no avail. The solution apparently is to compile the package
from source and change some settings that I didn't quite understand (this is
in ppc). I would be more than willing to try xprint if I could get it
to work, using aptitude to install.

Well, from my own experience, downgrading to an older version has
brought back my printing within minutes after struggling with xprint for
several days
