Well, I'm chagrined at having used an invalid example--the result of
haste and frustration, no doubt. I'm sorry.

However, this does not seem to be the problem. Let me illustrate: I
paste the first line above into my sources.list. Here I paste it back
into this message from my sources.list as a double check:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

So, that is _exactly_ what is in my /etc/apt/sources.list, following
the lines for stable and local archives. I then run aptitude update
and, get the following return (again, copied and pasted):

# sudo aptitude update
...
Reading extended state information... Done
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://http.us.debian.org
unstable/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://http.us.debian.org unstable/contrib Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_contrib_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://http.us.debian.org unstable/non-free Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_non-free_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: You may want to update the package lists to correct these missing files

When I remove the offending line, aptitude update does what it is
suppsed to, visits the sites and reports the hits.
