If you have evolution (when you mentioned in your first email), there is
a button next to the smtp server config to check what authentication
methods are supported by a particular server.

Use that feature to find out which one to activate.

I am guessing that you do not have the right authentication method
specified. Some relays also check the from address.

BTW, I used eximconfig to setup relaying instead of doing it manually.
