After boot up, before you 'ifdown eth0' what do you see with ifconfig?
Also, during the boot process you should see a line like "Configuring
network interfaces...." followed by "done". Anything interesting in
between those two lines?

I scanned dmesg and didn't see anything with the above text. Instead, I do see, after loading yenta_socket, it loads tulip2 and reports:

eth0: Digital DS21143 Tulip rev 48 at 0x4000, 00:80:C8:42:2A;A7, IRQ 11.
... // some other stuff
eth0: Setting half-duplex based on MII#0 link partner capability of 0000.

And that's it. The card is a D-Link DFE-660.

One more thing I'd try is 'ifdown -a' followed by 'ifup -a' to see if
that is any different (probably not, but heck, I'm just guessing....)

I'll try that tonite when I leave work. I don't want to do it now since it's working and I need it to keep doing that at the moment. ;)
