Use ipchains to block those site to poke around you.  They usually come
from few fixed IP.  I block NNTP scan for ATTBI (Old @HOME cable)

For SMTP, use ISP smarthost for outbound.

For inbound, I get mail outside and use fetchmail to get them home.
