Right. Also, as I've said before, adding a symlink in the mix can only
confuse things further. Forget about a /dev/mouse symlink. Tell gpm to
use /dev/psaux and tell X to use /dev/gpmdata. See the links below.

ZAxisMapping is used to tell X which buttons you want to use for your
mouse's Z Axis. When you turn the scroll wheel up or down on a wheel
mouse, it generates a button event. The usual case (a 3-button mouse
with a wheel) is that button events 4 and 5 correspond to wheel motion,
and X should take note of this and recognize that buttons 4 and 5
correspond to "up" and "down" on the Z axis. (I may have confused which
is up and which is down, but I think you get the point.)
