While the reasoning is totally correct and reasonable, it still
doesn't explain why you deny that we should _think_ about changing our
CNAME scheme.
Because if we don't, we'll never change it and hence not really can
drop the FTP protocol.
I never said, that we should immediately drop the
ftp.$ccTLD.debian.org scheme. But I think we should start _thinking_
about moving to a new scheme, e.g. $ccTLD.mirrors.debian.org since we
already have http://debug.mirrors.debian.org/ and there recently was a
discussion about the naming scheme for per-cloud-provider mirrors.
That way we can also get rid of protocol names in host names in the
long run -- surely not in short term.
