chainloading is the better solution *iff* your bootloader and the bios support it in the particular case.

for usb sticks, it mostly depends on how broken the bios is. most of the early machines that had usb do not know about the usb ports unless the operating system has loaded specific drivers for it; so the bootloader can't access it and chainload will not work.

as a generic solution that should work on all machines with crappy bioses, chainloading is not a good solution, but loading both the kernel and initrd from the boot medium (cd) is.
