If you are getting a link light then this is not a laptop or a driver problem.
It is probably a wireless issue:
- - is your card setup in infrastructure or ad-hoc
- - correct essid?
Try installing the wireless-tools package and play with the commands that start
with 'iw'. Specifically try iwgetid and what that looks like.
