Ok, but still, how would mkvmlinuz act if there were no vmlinux
installed, but only a vmlinuz ?

No, a warning is unaceptable, it should just work.

Well, that would be a possibility. The other possibility would be to
depend on mkvmlinuz, but to have it be automatically called only on the
subarches which needs it, this means doing a test for them in the
mkvmlinuz script. But seriously, is there a serious reason why this
would not be needed. Is installing mkvmlinuz such a problem, especially
if you have a subarch aware debconfified postinst ?

But debian would be a more stable and usable system by now too. I would
even say that it would be your duty as a maintainer to fill those bugs,
in order to spare the less advanced guy those same troubles. It should
just work out of the box, and if it does not, then it is a bug.
