Not a bad start. Of course the first thing that will change is the
background color, as I don't think I've ever looked at the same color
background on any two consecutive days on my daughter's desktop. If you
want to preserve the three-color scheme, the blue should be worked into
the theme somewhere other than just the background.

Well, on 1024x768 on a 17" monitor, the fonts stand out well enough. I'm
not sure if they wouldn't still be too small on an old 14" and 1024x768,
which is what the kids' primary system has. I'll have to check it out at
home, and also get some comments from my children about it.

Hm. I'm not sure if I were a 10-year-old I would want my OS logo to be a
toy block. Something with broader appeal perhaps? The swirl by itself
looks a bit ... stuffy. Maybe we could simply anthropomorphize the swirl
and put it (him/her) into action? rough sketch:

             ( o ) ( o )
             _sudZUZ#Z#XZo=_
          _jmZZ2!!~---~!!X##wa

     _#e' .]X2( ~Xw| )XXc
    .2Z` ]X[. xY| ]oZ(

flying swirl?

the bottom loop of the swirl is suggestive of a smile and the curl
is suggestive of a nose. only a pair of eyes and some lines of motion
are really needed to bring it to life. but I am not an artist, so I'll
leave it to someone with talent to make it work. :)
