Re: Kaffe in testing
Hi Ean,

The problem for me at this point isn't so much a lack of time as it is a
lack of understanding about the release cycle underway. I've heard
varying stories about whether we can or can't upgrade to new upstream
versions. If we can then I've already got 1.1.2 packaged. You can
download an i386 version at
http://www.brainfood.com/~ean/kaffe_1.1.2-1_i386.deb.
could you do an update of 1.0.5 first, please? That RC bug[1] is one of
the two[2] holding back kaffe from entering testing from what I see on
[3]. An upload of 1.1.2 will not fix that bug, as it's a bug in stable,
and 1.1.2 is has no chance going into stable until the next release,
sarge, afaik.
You said in late august[3], you'd like to fix that one by adding
debhelper as a build depend to 1.0.5. Did that work out?
Therefore:
- Download and have a look at that 1.1.2 package if you are on 386.
looks nice to me, all the files seem to be there. I don't have a
self-administered debian box on i386, so I can't really test.
- Tell me whether you think upgrading to 1.1.2, 1.1.3, etc. etc. while
we are in freeze is legitimate or whether we need to be backporting
patches from CVS.
1.1.3 is due in 2 weeks. It will be released on time, working as far as
we get it to. i386-linux works fine with current CVS.
If you want to backport patches, you'll have to seriously sink some time
into developing kaffe, or you'll end up frustrated by the pace. It
develops quite quickly at times. My plans include putting in inetlib, a
java orb, and rxtx, among other niceties, and there will be a few new
AWT implementations on the way, too. NIO is very much under development,
as are other parts of the class library while we are switching over to
GNU Classpath, and fixing its newfound bugs.
- If you really want to see results stop complaining about problems and
ship me a DBS formatted patch file for whatever is bothering you. Oh,
and make sure it actually works first too.
Yep, that's the way it's done in the free software world.
And please forward the patches you get upstream, if they still apply to
the CVS. It's quite annoying to have to do the stupid wrapped string
compiler error patch for gcc 3.3, only to discover that someone half-did
it already for debian. We need more contributors anyway ;)
cheers,
