No, and I never implied that such a mapping would be possible or
would make sense.

I don't have the know-how to do the work on that bug. I (looking at
the responses, wrongly) assumed that there were several "latin-based" 
languages that
could *temporarily* do such a transliteration, i.e. while the game is
beeing fixed. That's exactly why I want this at build time - this way,
the (correct) translations remain unaltered in place while the
(suboptimal) display with the transliteration would be printed (until
the game is fixed and the transliteration can be removed).

But since German seems to be the only case, I can easily do the string
substitution using sed at build time, of course. For all other
languages I suggest translators to wait with their work until the bug
(missing sprites for their language) are fixed.
