There's a soundmodem in the kernel? I was not aware of this.

Me and a few others had been using UZ7HO Soundmodem and found it a pain to
configure. direwolf "just works" if you're using VOX on a handheld which
provides almost zero barrier to entry for APRS. It's not hard to configure
it to do the PTT either, one line of config.

The user guide does provide comparisons between Dire Wolf and UZ7HO
Soundmodem. A utility is also included in the package, aclients, for
comparing TNC's ability to decode packets.
