I should be a bit more specific/clear:

Back in Linux Kernel 2.2 Thomas Sailer HB9JNX/AE4WA wrote a sound card modem 
module for the kernel.  Eventually it was converted to a user space program.
It exists in Debian as the package soundmodem and the current package in 
sid is at version 0.18-1. (It also is available in previous stable releases)

I looked at the user guide before I asked the question.  Not terribly convined
by the testing methodology yet, but I didn't do an in depth analysis either.
The criteria for "a is better than b" can be somewhat subjective.
