Hm, am I looking at the wrong version?  The control file still mention
'GIScience' and 'e' as an English work.

And if you changed the upstream tarball, I believe it should have a
debian-specific version (adding dfsg to it seem to be popular), and
the changelog should mention what was changed in it.  I would
recommend only removing files from it, and changing the build rules as
diffs in debian/patches.

Did you try building it in pbuilder to verify the build dependencies?

I'm testing a build now.
